"TRAVELING THRU"

That moment in the day when the sky just glows with sun sitting is magical. it is a time of day that for me is wonderful to capture and give life to on canvas. This was on my way to Santa Fe, I had pulled off on the side of the road, took one shot and a week later back in my studio this emerged. This is a 30x36 oil on canvas... This is one of many sky paintings I did that is coming to an end for me, maybe I will explore it again but for now I need to push on the envelope of creativity....

Spending time in the west with open vistas of space and roads that look like they go forever it was just by chance that while on this stretch of a back-road I caught this car pulling out in front of me. I had no choice but to give this painting its name. This is an oil on canvas 36x30

I wanted to capture the power in these cliffs I wanted to paint just how majestic they appeared.
This original oil painting is 70x38 it is sold but I think I will do it as one of my miniature 8x6 inch.

With the sun setting and the shadows on the snow I new this would make for a good painting to do.
I studied my photo for a long time to understand just what happens with the glare of light and all the shadows it forms, it was at that point I started on the journey of giving this painting life. It is an original oil on canvas, a 32x36 gallery wrapped & painted on all four sides so no framing is needed.

This painting is of a little known back road heading out of Palm Springs into Arizona.

I have driven this stretch so many times I have lost count. On this day, like all the other days one can travel for hours and not see another car coming or going. Then when you do spot a car, it's like its moving in slow motion till it passes in a blur as I look in my rear view mirror and watch it slowly disappear. This is a 36x36 inch oil on caves..

This painting was really a workout capturing the mood of the day with the sun shinning, clouds darkening vanishing points and all that is going on was a real brain twister for me. I was heading into New Mexico when I pulled of the road grabbing my camera and taking one shot as it started to rain. Back in my car I continued into Santa Fe and dinner. I do love the weather condition's that take place in the deserts, you can see storms coming from what seems to be hundreds of miles away. This is one of my paintings in Chemers Gallery. New and finely finished. I have made my last change to this, now it has to dry enough so I can varnish. This is all about the open plains and big sky that is most of our country. We on the other hand want to squeeze into narrow strips of land for our need to be close to water. But the lands and space that prevails in such grand abundance is what I like painting most. "Smokin" is a 60x36 oil on canvas.

There is something that I just love about after it rains, the sun is dropping out of the sky and the air has been washed clean that strikes a cord deep inside my me. As far back as I can remember the fascination of reflections on the wet pavement,glistening light on rain soaked leaves, all this is magical to see and paint. This painting is 60x24

This is crossing a part of Palm Springs that few ever travel on... It is... Nay! I was going to say where it is but I wont, I like this road to be quiet, I have driven for two hours and not pass a car, when a little younger and silly I would drive this by the light of the moon... Silly : )

This is a 60x48 canvas of a place that has disappeared by the name of progress and the people that want to leave a big footprint on the planet. I had photographed this many years ago before the great mall came in, before the widening of the canyon, before couples came and said "Let's make the house THIS BIGGER!" : )... So going through my photos and finding this, I decided to paint this small part of EARTH. The two top photos are close-ups and the larger is the full painting.

After hours of driving I pulled off on the side of the highway to get out and stretch my legs. Leaning back against my van and relaxing, I felt a warm summers breeze sweep easily over me from this wonderful Nebraskan landscape. Looking around I turned just in time to see these grain silos way off in the distance catch the last light of the setting sun and I thought," what a fantastic country this is". Late night, a little hungry and tired after a long days drive it was good to find a place that is still open. A nice hot cup of coffee, a slice of pie I now can sit back and reply my camera on today's shoot. Deleting some, keeping others, deciding on what might I paint and how large will I make the painting. Downing my third cup of Jo and finishing "I must say" a great piece of lemon-meringue pie I knew I had some good material to keep me busy painting. Now it's time to find a rood and sleep. This is the third in the series for Chemers gallery that I will deliver once dry. This is a 12x12 oil on canvas.... I just might do bigger, mmmm!

"HEADING WEST"

For me it was like finding a long lost friend. This painting was lost in the shuffle of a galleries inventory, when the relation ended this painting reappeared and was shipped back to me. Yes I to am at blame for not keeping closer tabs, but, it all has a happy ending, I got my baby back and can re-introduce it. This painting came about from me being on a road at the right time. I was heading back to California when out of the corner of my eye I saw this red pickup coming down a dusty road, I slowed letting him get in front, as the truck entered into my lane I was excited to see the pillbox air-stream in tow, reached for my trusty camera, took one shot knowing my next painting was locked inside... Not just looking at the reflections but reflecting... Simpler times... the fifties.. No iPods, cell phones, flat screens, up-loads & down-loads.. Simpler times... Now don't get me wrong, "I LOVE MY MAC" In another life I would probably have gone and become a computer geek... But! in this life I paint... When living in San Luis Obispo, I met this guy who became a good friend and come to find out
a fantastic fisherman... So for two years, practically every weekend we went fishing, his requirement for taking me out on his bass boat was, I did not smoke or drink hard liquor, never had, don't intend to start I told him... With that, my introduction to lake fishing was a magical experence for both my skill and my minds eye. This is one of many viwes in just drifting in silence. Oil on canvas, 32"x28"

I painted this on a new canvas that I had not worked on before, it has a very smooth surface and was not sure of it taking the oils like I wanted and needed... When I started at the top, developing the shad in the sky I knew I made the right decision in using this canvas.. Here is a painting that I had for a year and just last week pulled it out of my storage room where I keep my paintings when there is no more room on the walls. Will I took a look at it with new eyes after a year and put it up on my easel and made some big changes to it and found I did the right thing..... I was in my friends duffy in the harbor in Newport at sunset and took this shot. The sun had already set so the fun zone was in deep shadows. The sky is from an earlier shot in the day so I put both photos together to make this dramatic contrast of color and mood. Size is 50"X40"

Here is another for the Laguna show. This is coast hwy coming out of Laguna beach. A drive I do many times rather then take the freeways. The painting was fun to do and to see that I got the feeling moving down this road and of the space in front of us. The size is 50"X40"

Yes! this is the beginning of the painting that one can see from my little 6"x6" blog study. After prepping the canvas I develop the color for the sky and apply this to the background giving me a sense of what the clouds will be up against, then the fun begins.... I'll be back later with more.

To work in black & white is much more difficult then color for you can razzle-dazzle the eye with color but, B&W your ether on the mark or your starting over. I feel I nailed this one after re-painting how the snow laid on the mountain. the size is 32X36 price $2,800

The two new paintings that will be coming up on my blog I have just completed, one is a spin from a large canvas. I love painting them for they are a challenge. I make my own black colors giving them the depth needed to achieve the tone and mood of a black & white.

This is one of many rivers I past over on a trip across the American plaines. I shot this as I was driving and had no idea how it came out tell I saw the photo, then it was a no-brainier to want to paint it. 20"X24" $750 with or without the frame.

This is painted from one of my many photos. It took 5 weeks to complete painting everyday for ten to twelve hours a day. I paint the background white and it is painted like a watercolor so I did not use white for my highlights but pushed the color till it was so then as to give me the glow of reflections I needed. This painting is going on tour for two years in 2008. It is in a privet collection. The size is 38x42
